I’m in the middle of composing backlogged blog entries on various recent events, including a full report on B’s visit, my new apartment, and the biorobotics lab’s trip to Cedar Point, but I have to take a moment to shamelessly advertise recount tonight’s adventure.
Sunday night included a trip to my uni’s Film Society to see a free screening of Casablanca, a tradition here. For newer readers, I should note that I’m a Film Soc junkie. Mark, Jessica, and I are there nearly every week, sometimes twice in a weekend. As a draw for their later showings (which are not free), Film Soc had a select number of seats with passes to a free advanced screening of Serenity to give away. My group didn’t win any, but, as one of the directors of Film Soc passed me in the aisle, she handed me a fistful of passes, saying, “You guys are here every week. You’re awesome!”
Not one to pass up a free movie, my friends and I went to the theater tonight. Before I continue, allow me to assure you that there are NO SPOILERS here.

I fully admit that I did not have high hopes for this movie at all. I was never the least bit impressed or interested in Joss Whedon’s other work (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel primarily). To be honest, I found–and still find–them to be out-and-out bad. I’d never seen a single episode of Firefly, and, though I could tell you a couple of names, I knew nothing about the characters or story.
But this movie was awesome. As Mark put it, this is what the Star Wars prequels should have been. I’m not going to claim complete obsession or undying love to the movie/series, but I’m definitely borrowing a friend’s copy of the DVDs and giving this a serious chance.
The movie comes out in theaters September 30th. Don’t judge it by the trailer. Go see it.
Yay “Serenity”!!
I will not even try to hide my enthusiastic response to this entry of yours; I (unlike you) am a big Joss Whedon fan and, having been a sceptic regarding “Buffy” and “Angel” for the longest time, I was surprised by my own 180° turn after watching the first Buffy season on DVD.
(I do understand where you’re coming from, though. It’s not for everyone, and I personally had to look beyond the whole vampire thing and learn to appreciate the wonderfully sarcastic humor and great writing in Joss Whedon’s shows. But I digress.)
So a friend of mine (and a BtVS/Angel fan like myself) made me watch Firefly. It took a little getting used to, because Joss Whedon and SciFi felt like a weird mix to me at first. But it’s a great show. And I can’t wait to see the movie.
I’m happy to hear that you liked the movie so much (although I can’t deny that I’m extremely jealous of you for having seen it already). Hope you enjoy the DVDs as well.
HA! HA HA HA HA HA! Everyone should listen to me and do as I say!
Did you get a copy of the DVDs? If not, let me know.
*bounces with glee*
To Imke:On the Buffy and Angel thing, it’s not the vampires that turn me off. I can’t possibly claim that, given that I write original fiction with vampire-like characters. I’ve watched several episodes of both series and the writing/acting/whatever just doesn’t prompt me to care at all. I can’t sit around for hours watching a show with characters and a plot I don’t care about.
Now that I’ve started watching Firefly, I think that it’s lucky that I saw Serenity first. I understand that the first five episodes or so represented them getting started on the series and trying to get a handle on the characters and such, but I probably wouldn’t have stuck with it had it not been for how much Serenity impressed me. At this point, of course, I’m thoroughly enjoying the episodes. Every night people start asking if everyone will be available for an episode or two!
To Amy: I don’t have a copy of the DVDs, actually. We borrowed them from a friend. I was seriously considering buying myself a set for my upcoming birthday, though.
PLEASE let me buy them for you. I get such a kick out of it.
I’m glad you’re liking the series!
And for the record, Buffy and Angel are not about Vampires, they just have Vampires in them. It’s weird.
Amy, how could I refuse an offer like that? I’ll e-mail you with my current mailing address
And I realize that Buffy and Angel aren’t about vampires. I just never could get into what they were about either. Neither could my suitemates. But we’re not holding that against Firefly or Serenity
Excellent! Now I know what your birthday present will be.
Yeah, there aren’t any vampires in Firefly or Serenity.
Birthday present! Whee!
I have nothing against vampires, as I told Imke. I write about them for heaven’s sake
