I loved the pictures as it helped me to be there and explore with you. Its really cool to find the history within our deep forest and how it brings alive our imagination of the time when it was all first created. The last place I went was wildwood state park on Long Island Ny, and we found trees all through the trail covered in peoples carved initials miles and miles of trees. Some dating back to the 50's. Anyways, thanks for sharing your creative adventure.

Great post. I just read the first few pages of Angels & Demons and was trying to figure out how much of an embellishment this was. Thanks for posting it; I found the article very interesting.

That it was! And I believe that you're right about the chert. Joe is definitely much better with geology than I am, but I don't think he was familiar with chert (in that form at least) because it's primarily found in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and parts of Texas. He did note (prior to a positive identification) that it would be a good material for knapping, and I assured him that it was extensively used that way by Native Americans.

Besides the trees, I believe I taught you a few other things including chert. We can work on birds; however, it seems that the real lesson to appreciate nature was a resounding success.

So, I don't know if you remember me or not... we would chat online sometimes a while back (I think you were at Case at the time, and I was still at home in Cleveland). I was saranoh on LiveJournal and saranoh323 on AIM. I randomly came across your blog buried among my thousands of bookmarks and decided to check it out and see what you're up to these days.

I am SUPER excited to see that you've started cycling. I just started cycling earlier this year and it is, hands down, the best thing that has ever happened to me. All those things you said about loving cycling, I totally hear you! I would add that one of my favorite things is that the singular focus while you're riding is amazingly meditative. Only thinking about the 200 meters in front of you can be such a blessing when there are a thousand thoughts otherwise cluttering your mind.

I actually got started by taking a track cycling class at the local Velodrome (I'm in San Diego now) and shortly thereafter started racing. Track racing is the most terrifying thing I have every done, but it is also the most exhilarating. Even more so because I never, in a million years, imagined that I would fall so IN LOVE with a sport. If you've never seen a track cycling race before you should definitely check it out if you ever have a chance. I don't know where you are in Texas (I've only just gathered from this post that you're in Texas now), but there's a Velodrome Houston and one in Frisco.

Anyway, I enthusiastically agree with all the things you've said here! And I'd love it if you dropped me a line sometime to let me know what's up and how life's treating you. And if you've had any awesome clingy adventures since October. :)

Best,
Sara

[...] 100 Days As A Cyclist Published on 25 October 2010 in Journal. from silver-starlight.net One hundred days ago I bought my first nice bike (a.k.a. my first bike purchased from a bike shop and not a department store). What possessed me, aside from the thrill of learning that I’d passed my quals for the last time ever? Well, Joe and I had rented bikes to ride the Cades Cove loop in Great Smoky Mountains National Park a few weeks earlier, and, despite the absolute clunkers we rode and my abysmal performance as a rider, I’d had just enough fun to consider taking the plunge. … [...]
