Well, let's try a quick review of what's been going on recently:

My roommate is all moved in, and things are going well. We're already making plans as to meals to try and outings and events to have with other grads once we get to know people a little better. We've been watching my Firefly DVDs and both enjoying that. It's been awhile since I've watched them, but I find myself introducing virtually every episode with the comment, "Oh, this is a really good one!"

Orientation events have somewhat come and gone. The university orientation involved hundreds of new graduate students all in one room so that we could be addressed by deans and administrators with names like Sonny Power. Talk about hippie-ish. Other than some fidgeting, I survived those just fine.

Today's department orientation was better, being a smaller affair. It began with lunch with the faculty, and I was surprised to find that there were several faculty members who made a point of coming over to me to say hello. I definitely didn't expect that.

So far next semester's courses will involve Foundations of Fluid Dynamics and Aerodynamics and Methods of Applied Mathematics I. I can tell how jealous you all are from here. Haven't picked my last technical course, nor have I chosen any non-technical course for my personal consumption.

I'm already making friends with some of the other first-years. I think we're going to have a lot of fun together.

To start the year out right, I'm showing Casablanca tomorrow night. Classes begin the day after.

The department's graduate student organization is having a special welcoming event down on the Commons this Saturday. On the flier, they put the Snakes on a Plane logo, crossed out Snakes and a Plane and wrote in Graduate Students and the Commons. The following note was also added: Honestly, which is scarier?

After a painfully long wait tonight, I got a new cell phone and number. Those of you in my address book should expect a mass e-mail soon with my new contact info.

It seems like the only entries I find time to make these days are brief one-offs, especially about the upcoming Frames show, but I guess that's what happens during midterms. No one here wants to read about lots of studying and working on thermoacoustic refrigerators, right? Didn't think so.

Anyways, I just had an amusing encounter with the friend responsible for me seeing Serenity. She went to see Spamalot this weekend (since it was her birthday) and got to meet Alan Tudyk, who played Wash on Firefly. When he came out the stage door, he saw her holding her DVDs and got all excited and conversed with her about the show and movie for nearly ten minutes even though there were a bunch of other people waiting for autographs. Apparently he's a lot handsomer in person than he's been in any of his roles; having seen the picture she snapped of him, I've got to agree. In any case, I was amused to see Brooke so bouncy.

Speaking of bouncy, I finally got my ticket order to go through! Now I don't have to worry about missing the lads this Friday!

Sunday night included a trip to my uni's Film Society to see a free screening of Casablanca, a tradition here. For newer readers, I should note that I'm a Film Soc junkie. Mark, Jessica, and I are there nearly every week, sometimes twice in a weekend. As a draw for their later showings (which are not free), Film Soc had a select number of seats with passes to a free advanced screening of Serenity to give away. My group didn't win any, but, as one of the directors of Film Soc passed me in the aisle, she handed me a fistful of passes, saying, "You guys are here every week. You're awesome!"

Not one to pass up a free movie, my friends and I went to the theater tonight. Before I continue, allow me to assure you that there are NO SPOILERS here.

I fully admit that I did not have high hopes for this movie at all. I was never the least bit impressed or interested in Joss Whedon's other work (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel primarily). To be honest, I found--and still find--them to be out-and-out bad. I'd never seen a single episode of Firefly, and, though I could tell you a couple of names, I knew nothing about the characters or story.

But this movie was awesome. As Mark put it, this is what the Star Wars prequels should have been. I'm not going to claim complete obsession or undying love to the movie/series, but I'm definitely borrowing a friend's copy of the DVDs and giving this a serious chance.

The movie comes out in theaters September 30th. Don't judge it by the trailer. Go see it.
